In this article, find out what grey water is, its effects on the ecosystem and the simple steps you can take to limit its impact while sailing responsibly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is grey water ?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Grey water, also known as \u2018household water\u2019, is simply water used for washing inside (sink, shower, washbasin, etc.) and outside (deck, cockpit, etc.).<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-thumbnail\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.marinasbrest.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Eaux-grises-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13337\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Grey water is often considered less polluting than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinasbrest.fr\/en\/all-the-news\/black-water-on-board-definition-impact-and-good-practices\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">black water<\/a>. Yet it contains chemicals that are harmful to the environment: washing-up liquid, soap residues, detergents, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The impact of grey water on the environment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, grey water has an impact on the environment because:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>it disrupts oxygen exchanges<\/strong>: it contains organic residues, oils and detergents that disrupt oxygen exchanges in the water. Fats form a film that prevents oxygenation, while the decomposition of organic matter consumes oxygen. These disturbances can lead to a lack of oxygen, seriously affecting aquatic ecosystems.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>it endangers marine life<\/strong>: grey water can inhibit the growth of aquatic organisms, slowing their development. Chemical contaminants, like surfactants and oils, disrupt essential processes such as photosynthesis and metabolism. This affects plants, algae and marine animals, compromising the balance of aquatic ecosystems.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>it presents a danger to humans<\/strong>: cleaning products contain chemicals that can be allergenic or even carcinogenic. What's more, most of them are as useless as they are expensive.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>it ccentuates coastal erosion<\/strong>: when sea spray reaches the coast, it is contaminated by grey water and attaches itself to plants. This weakens them, and the loss of these plants accelerates coastal erosion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Good practices on board and in the harbour<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To reduce the impact of our activities, there are a few simple <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinasbrest.fr\/en\/all-the-news\/ecogestures-for-yachtsmen-reducing-your-carbon-footprint-when-sailing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ecogestures<\/a> to adopt:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Use harbour facilities<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To avoid discharging polluted water, give priority to using the showers and washbasins provided for yachtsmen.
